Irish Agency Ignition Digital Challenges AI-First Marketing Trend After Discovering $2,000 Budget Blunder

DUBLIN, IRELAND – As artificial intelligence continues to reshape the digital marketing industry, one Irish agency is warning businesses against handing over the keys too quickly.

Ignition Digital was founded in early 2026 by former dentsu Head of PPC Richard O’Sullivan with a clear objective: to address growing client frustration around declining service quality, fragmented account management structures, and the increasing outsourcing of critical marketing work.

One example involved an accommodation provider whose Google Ads account was being managed by a purely AI-led system. During an audit, Ignition Digital discovered the platform had added the keyword “Christmas” to the account, despite it having no relevance to the business. The result was more than $2,000 in wasted advertising spend.

“Many businesses feel disconnected from the expertise they were originally promised when engaging an agency,” said O’Sullivan. “The reality is that many agencies and individual specialists are running before they can walk. AI tools can be incredible when used properly, but we’re auditing accounts every week where performance has declined because too much trust has been placed in automation without proper oversight and data-led testing frameworks.”

Founded by O’Sullivan after more than a decade managing campaigns for global brands, Ignition Digital takes a different approach. The agency positions itself as a senior-led paid media consultancy, with every strategy driven by experienced specialists rather than outsourced teams or fully automated systems.

The agency does use AI where appropriate, but only after rigorous testing and validation.

“We’re not anti-AI. Quite the opposite,” O’Sullivan added. “We use AI every day. The difference is that we test everything before it touches a client’s budget. Human expertise comes first, data comes second”

That philosophy is already attracting attention across Europe.

Earlier this year, Ignition Digital was shortlisted in six categories at the prestigious European Search Awards, one of the industry’s most respected international competitions. The agency went on to win Gold for Best Low Budget Campaign, outperforming other agencies in the category who have been in business for more than a decade. The achievement came only 6 months after the agency’s launch and placed the Dublin firm alongside some of the continent’s most recognised digital marketing names.

The recognition reflects a growing demand among businesses for experienced, accountable marketing partners capable of delivering measurable commercial outcomes rather than simply managing channels.

For O’Sullivan, the recognition validates a belief that expertise still matters in an increasingly automated world.
